Trip Grading

Our participants are sometimes concerned that our course and trips might be beyond their capabilities. Vertical Bug has a range of trips, with something for everybody. The physical grading gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the trip. While generalizations are always tricky, a summary of our grading follows...

Clearly, there are many different factors that contribute to the difficulty of a particular trip, including, length of day, terrain, altitude and weather conditions. Since some of these factors are necessarily changeable, any system of grades can only provide a general indication. Although we have tried to make our grading system as clear as possible, it cannot take into account your personal interests, abilities or experience. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please contact us.

To show the relative difficulty of our trips, we give each of them a grade. Our simple, colour-coded grade symbol provides an indication of the difficulty of each trip. We have classified them into 4 Grades – each identified by a different color.

Yellow
Suitable for most people in good health, trips at this grade include only limited amounts of activity. Any elements of walking are predominantly on good paths and activity of abseiling or climbing would be introductory patches. It might be a relaxed trip but, you still cant bring your Louis Vuitton bag here.

Green
Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as weekend walkers, trips at this grade generally include relatively short walking days, on good paths and tracks. There can be the occasional more difficult stretch. This can include challenging gradients, but not impossible routes.

Blue
Physically challenging trips, where you need to be prepared before you go. Trips at this grade are suitable for regular hill walkers who are used to extended days and can involve difficult and sometimes slippery terrain, as well as high vertical rock faces. This trip would demand experience of walking on wet rocks, exposed faces, challenging abseils or skilled climbing.

Red
Our toughest programmes, involving many long days, often in isolated areas and at extreme altitude. May also include difficult pass crossings, requiring basic mountaineering skills and equipment. Climbing includes overhangs, painful vertical faces and potential dangers. A high level of fitness and previous wilderness and mountain experience is essential. This is the real deal. Gentlemen, this is what you have been training for.
